Technically, Kokondo is a Jutsu style. |
"Jutsu" |
The primary goals are perfection of technique and realistic self defense. |
Philosophically, Kokondo is a Budo style. |
"Do" |
The primary goals are perfection of character, partner's safety, " doing one's best". |

The training primarily consists of Kihon, Kata, and Kumite.
Kihon |
The basics of martial art movement. The body is designed to work in very specific ways. From this starting point, we train the principles required to achieve maximum efficiency, speed, and power. Kihon are the foundation upon which everything is built.
Kata |
Pre arranged forms. The kihon are taken and put together in a systematic way. The kata are the self defense techniques of the system. The study of kata produce many benefits. These include, Bunkai (kata knowledge), quality of movement (transitions, moving from center, locking out, flow, rhythm, speed, and power), Kuzushi (unbalancing), Sen (strategy), and many more.
Kumite |
Self Defense. The training has to cover every possible scenario from, single attacks, multiple attackers, attacker with weapon, and hostage situations. The training must also cover all possible conditions, situations, and surroundings. All of these have to be dealt with from the assumption that the attacker is larger and stronger. If a technique requires strength to be able to execute it, then it is not a realistic technique. |

Jukido Jujitsu |
The training focus is Nage waza, Osae waza, and Shime waza.
Nage waza |
Throwing techniques. The goal is maximum efficiency with minimal effort. The point when the attacker is most vulnerable to a throw is when they are off balance. When done properly, throws can be devastating techniques.
Osae waza |
Restraining techniques are used when it is necessary to control the attacker for a period of time. These types of techniques require very little force to maintain for an extended period.
Shime waza |
Choking techniques are used in situations where it is inappropriate to use striking techniques. When done correctly chokes happen very quickly and without permanent damage.

Kobudo
The training consists primarily of Bo, Sai, Tonfa, jo, yawara, and Niaha
The primary source of the traditional weapons studied in Kokondo are from Okinawa. The study of these traditional weapons have many benefits which apply to both the weapons and the empty hand techniques. The only weapons included as a part of the Kokondo training are the ones which will enhance our empty hand techniques. The addition of a weapon does not change the way the kihon (basics) are executed. This way the weapon becomes an extension of the body. By training with the weapons we learn how they work and how to defend against them. Another benefit is training the fundamental principles from a different perspective. An example is maai (distance), learning to defend against the Bo and the additional reach will help the student to better understand the ranges they are already training. While the sword is not a part of the IKA curriculum, some Dans (black belts) train this weapon also.
